The J offers quality, robust extracurricular programs for school-aged children taught by specialized and experienced partners. Options include sports, art, gymnastics, STEAM, dance, swim, karate, performing arts, and more.

Please see below for class schedules and class descriptions. Important: youth group swim lessons are on a different calendar cycle. The most current schedule of group swim classes can be found here.

Children enrolled in our afterschool program Almost Home may register with a 15% discount. Children in Almost Home and Club J will be walked to extracurriculars by their counselors; full-day Early Childhood Center children will be walked to their extracurriculars by their teacher or assistant director. Class Descriptions

Visual Arts

 

Art for Everyone, Grades K-6
This inclusive class is designed for elementary-aged students with varying abilities. It focuses on the process of art-making as a sensorial, creative, and productive experience. We will use a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional materials to complete projects that all children can feel proud of. This class is led by an art therapist who has experience working with children with a wide range of emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities.

 

Art Studio, Grades 3-5
Art Studio is for students with some art experience who are interested in further exploring two and three-dimensional media through multi-week projects. Students are encouraged to bring an idea or something they are working on to class, or they can come ready to start something new. Students will complete up to two projects in painting and/or sculpture, with room to explore less traditional media such as fibers.

 

Paint, Print, and Sculpt, Grades K-2
In this mixed media art class, students will build fine motor skills, explore their creativity, and expand their visual literacy while making both 2D and 3D art. They will explore line, shape, color, and form using materials and techniques such as crayons, watercolor paint, tempera paint, printmaking, found object sculpture, and papier-mâché.

 

Wild Art and Play, Ages 3-5
Springtime’s growing and the greening season will be our sensory-rich focus. We’ll observe buds and blossoms, and let the season’s colorful offerings inspire our process-oriented art-making. We will draw, paint, make collage, and play with nature-connected loose parts. This class combines four things that children love; being outdoors, examining nature, experimenting with art materials, and playing with friends. Learn more about Wild Art and Play.

LEGO Robotics and Engineering with iCamp, Grades 2-4
In this introductory robotics and coding course from LEGO, students will design and build robots using Lego robotics kits. They will use their STEM skills combined with critical thinking to work as a team to build robots and compete in exciting, mission-based games. Along with building, children will also practice their coding skills as they program their robots to accomplish practical goals. Students will apply themselves in engaging activities and missions while gaining productive learning habits, confidence, and teamwork skills along the way. Movable Machines with iCamp, Grades K-1
Learn about the fundamental principles of motion and energy by creating machines! Through explorations and projects, students will be able to identify and create the parts of simple and compound machines. They will be challenged to create machines that generate power and motion with no electricity and will hone their engineering skills by testing and remodeling their creations. Sports & Recreation Classes

 

American Goju Karate, all ages
Led by American GoJu Karate’s Director and Chief Instructor Sensei Bob Chillemi, this goal-oriented skills program helps children improve focus, control, balance, coordination, fitness, teamwork, discipline, and memory in a fun environment. Basketball Skills, Drills and Games with Northeast Elite, Grades K-2
This class will focus on the fundamentals of basketball in an exciting and nurturing environment. Northeast Elite programs are designed specifically for their respective age and skill levels, which is overseen by Coach Nick Resavy. Basketball Skill Development and Training with Northeast Elite, Grades 3-5
This upbeat class will focus on the specific skills of shooting and ball handling. Northeast Elite programs are designed specifically for their respective age and skill levels, which is overseen by Coach Nick Resavy. Gymnastics (preschool, ages 3-4)
This co-ed class for younger gymnasts is designed to develop your child’s physical and social abilities through body movement and group participation. Your child will learn basic gymnastics skills using the balance beam, bars, floor, trampoline, and basic tumbling skills.

 

Gymnastics levels 1&2
Students will build gymnastics skills that promote flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness, while also building positive self-esteem. This is a non-competitive program that builds progressive skills in a relaxed and fun yet challenging atmosphere. Activities include bars, tumbling, vault, balance beam, and trampoline.

 

Gymnastics level 3
Level 3 gymnastics is by invitation from Coach Mike only. If you are new to our program, please email [email protected] to schedule a time with our director for evaluation. This class is designed for girls ages 6 and up and will focus on the most advanced skills while building positive self-esteem in a relaxed, fun, yet challenging atmosphere. Activities include bars, tumbling, vault, balance beam, and trampoline.

 

Tumbling, Grades 4 & up
This co-ed class is designed for those who want to focus only on tumbling skills. Proper execution of standing and running tumbling skills will be taught. Aerials, walkovers, front/back handsprings, and more, will all be possible to learn. Each student will learn at their own level. Perfect for the aspiring cheerleader or gymnast wanting to work on tumbling passes!

 

Mini-Ballers with Train Like a Pro, Ages 3-4
Your child will learn basic sport fundamentals while improving their motor skills and having fun in a non-competitive environment. This class will focus on a different sport every week such as lacrosse, baseball, football, hockey, soccer, kickball, and basketball. Train Like a Pro was founded by Coach Danny Cadena. Fairy Tales from Around the World with Main Stages, Ages 3-5 and grades K-2
This performing arts-based class will explore diverse cultures’ fairy tales and folklore to teach relevant themes in a creative, fun, and interactive environment. Participants will engage in improv, movement, puppetry, and music activities which nurture imagination and empathy through the world of storytelling. Wayfinders on the Hudson

Base Camp: grades 2-3, grades 4-5, and grades 6-8
Wayfinders Base Camp explores our connections with nature, ourselves, each other, and our communities through individual (one-on-one) mentoring, weekly fire circles, and immersive nature connection games, social-emotional learning, leadership development, and community building. Intro to Rite of Passage, Grades 6-8

Wayfinders Spring Intro to Rite of Passage explores the transition from adolescence to adulthood in the context of connections with ourselves, each other, our communities, and the earth. The program takes place over two years, with a culminating rite of passage experience at the end of the second year in a non-denominational ceremony. The program includes retreats, a camping trip, a festival, a parent gathering, and three individual (one-on-one) mentoring sessions which lays the groundwork for the personal passion projects which take place in year 2.
