Individualized Rides

Individualized Rides

The JCC’s Transportation Support Program offers eligible riders access to subsidized, individualized rides ($5 per ride) within Westchester County and within a 12-mile radius of the Shames JCC. Rides are available for:

  • JCC Members* who are over 70
    • Between their residence and Shames JCC activities (on or off-site); and
    • Between their residence and partner synagogue activities (on or off-site)
  • Members of partner synagogues* (who are not also JCC members) who are over 70, between their residence and Shames JCC activities programs (on or off-site).

*Persons requiring transportation support but who do not explicitly meet the criteria above (i.e., people living with a disability) are encouraged to contact our Community Connector, Rena DeLevie, for further support and guidance.

Rides via Benedict Taxi
Eligible riders seeking transportation assistance on an as-needed basis can receive subsidized rides ($5 per ride) through our partnership with Benedict Taxi. Benedict has 3 local drivers, vetted by JCC staff, so riders will have consistency and continuity.

Rides on a Regular Schedule
Eligible riders seeking transportation assistance on a regularly scheduled basis (e.g., between home and the JCC, every Monday at 10am) may be connected with a JCC staff driver for transportation in a JCC vehicle at a subsidized rate ($5/ride).

Accessing Rides

Register for the JCC’s Transportation Support Program. This is only needed one time in order for the J to charge riders the $5 fee for rides booked going forward.

Arranging a Ride via Benedict Taxi:

  1. Upon registration, riders automatically receive e-mail confirmation, including a discount code to use when booking rides with Benedict Taxi.
  2. Call Benedict Taxi at (914) 924-5074 to book rides when needed.
  3. Provide Benedict Taxi the discount code when booking. Riders will then pay no fee to Benedict Taxi and will be charged by the JCC in the amount of $5 per ride. Tips are at the discretion of the rider and are appreciated!

Arranging a Regularly Scheduled Ride

  1. E-mail the JCC’s Community Connector, Rena DeLevie at rdelevie@shamesjcc.org.
  2. Rena will reply to help schedule the requested ride, subject to JCC driver and vehicle availability.
  3. Riders will be charged to the rider’s JCC account in the amount of $5 per ride.
FAQs
  1. How far in advance can I book a ride?
    1. You can book a ride as early as one month in advance or as late as one hour before the pickup time.
  2. What if I need to cancel a taxi ride?
    1. Call Benedict to cancel the ride. Note: Cancellations made less than one hour before the scheduled ride will be charged the full, unsubsidized ride cost.
  3. May I book a ride to any JCC program or activity?
    1. Rides may be booked to JCC events both on and off-site; however, when off-site locations are beyond the 12 mile radius, alternatives such as group transportation may be provided instead.
  4. Can I book a ride to a doctor’s appointment? To the grocery store?
    1. No – you will be charged the full, unsubsidized ride cost. Rides for JCC members are to the events and programs of the JCC or partner synagogues only; rides for members of partner synagogues are to JCC events and programs only.
  5. Can you tell me more about the drivers and vehicles?
    1. All drivers (from Benedict Taxi and the JCC) speak English. Some from Benedict Taxi may also speak Spanish. The cars are clean and comfortable sedans.
  6. Do I pay per rider or per ride?
    1. We offer pay per ride. If there are stops for other registered riders, they will also pay for their ride.
  7. What if I don’t meet the eligibility criteria but need a ride to the J?
    1. Any person seeking transportation support, who does not satisfy the criteria noted above should be directed to Rena for further discussion.  While the individual may not be eligible for subsidized rides, there may be other resources that Rena may share.  Further, Rena may escalate any requests for exceptions to the criteria to a member of the JCC’s Senior Leadership Team.  Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
  8. Does the $5 subsidized ride include tip?
    1. Tips are at the discretion of the rider and are appreciated!
