River Friends Day Camp: Assistant Counselor (16+)

Join River Friends Day Camp as an Assistant Counselor, where you’ll help create an engaging, active, and welcoming environment for children ages 2-6 years old. Every day is a new adventure. Overview: The Assistant Counselor supports the Lead Counselor in caring for a small group of campers, helping ensure that every child is safe, happy, and fully engaged in their camp day. This role is ideal for emerging leaders who want to work closely with children and gain experience in early childhood or recreation settings.

Key Responsibilities: 

  •  Assist the Lead Counselor in supervising and transitioning the group from activity to activity.
  • Support campers’ physical, emotional, and social needs throughout the day.
  • Actively support and participate in activities led by specialists and Activity Coordinators.
  • Actively engage campers in developmentally appropriate play and activities while on the playground, field, or in classrooms.
  • Foster kindness, cooperation, and fun within the camper group.
  • Encourage participation and assist with behavior guidance as directed by the Lead Counselor and Division Head.
  • Assist with daily routines (snacks, sunscreen, handwashing, cleanup, diapering, etc.).
  • Observe camper behavior and immediately report concerns to the Lead Counselor.
  • Model responsibility, empathy, and enthusiasm in all interactions.
  • Ensure spaces and supplies are safe, clean, and well-organized.
  • Participate in daily swim time by getting in the water and actively supervising campers during all swim lessons.
  • Participate in all required training and development opportunities preceding and during camp, including orientation and staff meetings and Parent Nights.

Relationships & Supervision: 

Reports to: Division Head & Camp Director
Collaborates with: Lead Counselor, Specialists, Activity Coordinator, Aquatics Staff, and fellow counselors.

Qualifications & Requirements: 

  • Interest in working with young children in a camp, school, or childcare setting.
  • Positive role model with strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and work cooperatively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Patient, energetic, and excited to learn from senior staff.
  • Must be able to confidently swim and actively supervise campers in the water.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) preferred.

Hours: Daily Monday through Friday 8:15 am–3:30pm during the camp season

Camp Dates: June 29–August 21, 2026 (no camp on July 3)

Orientation Dates: 

  • June 15, 7-8pm: Zoom Orientation
  • June 19, 9am-4pm: Orientation
  • June 20, 9am-4pm: Orientation
  • June 27, 9am-4pm: Orientation and Room Set-Up
  • June 28, 9am-12pm: Camper/Parent Orientation

Salary: $2,800-3,900 for the season, based on experience
