However, Napoleon Bonaparte’s unprecedented looting at the end of 18th century and what followed after his fall from power has been transformative in unexpected ways. In the first of a two-part series, we’ll explore the fascinating stories of some of the most famous artworks, how they ended up where they are today, and the long-lasting consequences of Napoleon’s looting, from the idea of public “universal museums” to the practice of restitution of looted art.
