Adaptive and Inclusive Fitness/Swim

Inclusive Yoga Class (All Ages)

Thursdays, October 9–November 20; 11:30 am–12:15 pm
Members: $30; non-members: $38

This adaptive yoga series supports body awareness, emotion regulation, balance, and gross motor coordination. Each session combines movement, sound, and breathing techniques to strengthen mind-body connection and motor planning. Led by an occupational therapy assistant and yoga instructor, this class encourages independence and wellness in a supportive community setting.

Open to all ages.

WISP (Wellness Incentive Support Program) in Partnership with WJCS

Wednesdays, September 10–November 19; 12:00–2:30 pm
Members: $55; non-members: $65

This two-part program includes a 45-minute fitness session that builds gross motor coordination, balance, and endurance. Following that, a hands-on cooking class develops ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) such as food prep, kitchen safety, following recipes, and working as a team. The structure of the class supports executive functioning, health literacy, and social connectedness.

This program is made possible with the support of The J.E. and Z.B. Butler Foundation.

Neurofit Strength

This class, led by Frank D’Efuemia, is intentionally designed for people with neurodegenerative challenges. It will  focus on aerobic conditioning, joint strengthening, balance work, and stretching, while fostering a sense of community amongst participants.

Please note, each participant must be able to sit independently on a chair. Once registered, we will schedule a phone call to learn more about you and how we can support you within the class.

Friday Night Sensory Friendly Swim

Come spend your Friday night with us; our pool will be reserved exclusively for families with an immediate member with a disability. In this sensory-friendly environment, you can enjoy a relaxing swim without the usual distractions. This event is designed to accommodate sensory sensitivities and ensure a comfortable, enjoyable experience for all participants.

Adaptive Swim Lessons

Have you been interested in swim lessons for a child with a disability? We are thrilled to announce that we now have three swim instructors who are certified in the “Swim Angelfish methodology,” providing adaptive lessons to individuals with anxiety, attention difficulties, Autism Spectrum Disorder, sensory challenges, coordination problems, physical disabilities, and more. If you are interested in learning more and seeing if our instructors are the right fit for your family’s needs, contact aquatics@shamesjcc.org.

*  This class is inclusive. Inclusive classes at the J are specifically designed and implemented to ensure individuals with or without disabilities can participate fully. The goal of these classes is to ensure all participants have the opportunity to foster community, learn new skills, and have fun!
