Reel to Real: The Zone of Interest

Wednesday, April 30 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

$5 for members; $10 non-members, includes movie snacks (BYO dinner)

Join us for our next Reel to Real featuring The Zone of Interest, the 2024 Academy and BAFTA Award-winning film by Jonathan Glazer. In this film, based on the book by Martin Amis, Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden beside the camp. After the viewing, we’ll explore how the film portrays the “banality of evil” and the chilling normalcy of Nazi ideology. We will question the ease with which ordinary people can participate in the dehumanization of victims and the normalization of violence, and how it might resonate in the present day.

About the presenter: Scott Bloom has spent his 33-year career at the intersection of mental health, schools, and communities. He was the founding director of School Mental Health Services for the New York City Department of Education, where he built a city-wide system of mental health services and resources in over 1800 city schools to better serve the needs of 1.2 million students and families. Mr. Bloom has certification as a psychotherapist and a private practice and supervision in New York City.
