Foreign Affairs Discussion Group: The Decline of Democracy

Wednesday, March 11 @ 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm

FREE for members; $10 for non-members

Will democracy survive the rise of authoritarianism?

In the past 15-20 years, nationalism and “authoritarian populism” have spread to many parts of the world while the number of democracies has declined. Today, only 45% of the world’s population lives in a democracy, vs. 63% in 2000. Much of the democratic backsliding is the result of the failures of the liberal democratic order, the rise of China, and social and cultural changes. Come hear more about the failures of the liberal order, the appeal of the authoritarian regimes, and whether democracy will revive over the medium and long term.
