Part of the Renard Lecture Series
American music stands beside the European tradition as its equal, but it comes from a completely different source–sound, memory, and lived experience. It grew along the corridor from Memphis to New Orleans, carried by musicians like Mamie Smith, Louis Armstrong, and Bessie Smith, who shaped a tradition we feel before we analyze. Join us as we follow that tradition from spirituals to blues to jazz.
