In order to help keep swimmers and staff healthy and do our part to protect against COVID-19, we require that all Aquatics Center participant follow these policies and procedures:

  • Aquatic programs are currently limited to swimmers ages 18+ with the exception of private swim lessons
  • Masks may not be worn in the shower or in the pool; Masks are required prior to entering the shower/pool, and after leaving the pool/shower.
  • Swim caps are mandatory. Swim caps sold in the Aquatics Office.
  • Prior to entering the pools, all patrons are required to rinse off using the on-deck showers as mandated by the DOH.
  • The Program Pool may only be used for lap swimming or water running
  • The Training Pool may only be used for Self-led Aquatic Exercise
  • For the safety of our lifeguards, patrons are not permitted to cross the 6-foot social distance tape around the lifeguard stands. For their sake and yours, please do not approach guards unless necessary and maintain distance.
  • Swimmers must provide their own equipment– kickboards, pull buoys, flippers, etc.

Private Swim Lessons:

  • For the health and safety of our participants and staff, swim instructors must maintain social distance and instruct from the pool deck.
  • Children who cannot swim 25 yards without aid or stopping must have an adult 18+ in the water with them. Instructors will advise the adult how to assist with the lesson.
  • Instructors may enter the water for demonstration purposes only, but must remain at least 6′ from participants.
  • Observers are not permitted on the pool deck once the lesson starts, but caregivers of children may drop off and pick-up 5-minutes before the lesson ends.
  • If a private lesson participant is unable to attend their lesson or needs to reschedule, they must call/email the Swim Lesson Coordinator, Julia Borges, at jborges@shames.org or aquatics@shamesjcc.org. We ask that you cancel at least 24 hours in advance, as a courtesy to our instructors. If you do not call and cancel at least 24 hours in advance, we must charge for the lesson to compensate the instructor. No more than 2 cancelations per 5 pack of lessons.
  • Instructors wait no longer than 15 minutes past the scheduled start time. Due to other schedule commitments, classes will only run to the scheduled end time regardless of the time started unless the late start is due to the instructor. After 15 minutes, if the participant has not shown, class will be forfeited.
  • All lessons must be paid in full prior to first lesson.
  • If your instructor is not present, our Aquatic Supervisor, or another certified instructor will conduct the private lesson.
  • Instructors are subject to change based on schedule with or without notice.
  • All lessons must be complete and expire within 90-days of purchase.
