Youth Visual Arts & STEAM Programs

We are so excited to be bringing back Scribble Art and Challenge Island (STEAM) to the JCC!

Scribble Art: We will offer two classes with Scribble Art beginning in March: a painting class for school-aged children that explores the elements of color, line, and shape through abstract and representational 2-dimensional art-making and a pre-scribblers class for 3 – 4-year-olds that allows budding artists to develop technical skills for various types of paint, and learn the importance of balancing careful decision-making with allowing artistic inspiration to flow. To learn more about Scribble Art, please visit their website.

Challenge Island: Challenge Island is where engineering meets imagination, offering hands-on, project-based learning, where participants cultivate 21st Century Skills. Children work in tribes (teams) to tackle STEAM challenges using everyday materials. The party-like atmosphere is felt throughout each class! For more information on Challenge Island, please visit their website.

Full class descriptions can be found below.

Painting (grades K – 5)

Grades K – 2: 8 Wednesdays, 4:20 – 5:05 pm
Grades 3 – 5: 8 Wednesdays, 3:30 – 4:15 pm

Members: $240; Nonmembers: $272

Painting explores the elements of color, line, and shape through abstract and representational 2-dimensional art-making. Projects include making deconstructed color wheels and inventing imaginative creatures. Artists develop technical skills for various types of paint and learn the importance of balancing careful decision-making with allowing artistic inspiration to flow.

Children participating in the JCC’s afterschool program Almost Home can register and be walked to class by counselors.

register for K – 2 register for grades 3 – 5
Pre-Scribblers (ages 3 – 4)

6 Sundays, 11:00 – 11:45 am; beginning March 6

Members: $180; Nonmembers: $204

Artists explore collage, painting, drawing, and sculpture! Each project is multi-layered and completed over a series of several classes. Our goals for our pre-school artists are to:

  • Experiment and explore a wide variety of artistic materials, tools & methods;
  • Develop an emerging understanding of how to create both abstract and representational artwork including an introduction to the art elements: color, shape and line;
  • Develop language to explain their process and artistic discoveries with peers;
  • Develop language to express what they see in the artwork of others

Parents and/or caregivers are encouraged to stay.

Challenge Island: Dazzling Decades (For grades K-5)

6 Mondays, 4:15–5:15 pm, beginning April 25
Members: $200; Nonmembers:

The Dazzling Decades takes inquisitive students on a journey through time to learn about, design and build some of the most iconic symbols and entertainment for young people in the recent past decades. Everything from creating records that spin on a jukebox to building a Simple Machine Treehouse for the pet rocks of the 1970s, to designing a Space Aliens Arcade, similar to the very first video game. Every Challenge Island class gives students the chance to become an engineer and design and build the most unique scientific and culturally relevant items.

Challenge Island is a one-of-a-kind enrichment program on the forefront of STEAM education. Children visit islands where they work together in STEAM Teams creating, designing, building, learning and having a huge amount of fun! Each class is active, exciting, and totally hands-on and encourages the children to collaborate, communicate, think critically and build their skills.
