Extracurriculars Fall 2024

The J offers quality, robust extracurricular programs for school-aged children taught by specialized and experienced partners. Options include sports, art, gymnastics, STEAM, dance, swim, karate, performing arts, and more. And new this fall, we even have musical theater in The Ark!

Select classes are eligible for our flexible after-school program Club J, which provides busing and wrap-around childcare on the day of the extracurricular activity for children enrolled in Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow and Irvington school districts. These classes are indicated with  (**).

Please see below for class schedules and class descriptions. Important: youth group swim lessons are on a different calendar cycle. The most current schedule of group swim classes can be found here. Please note, space is extremely limited.

Children enrolled in our afterschool program Almost Home may register for extracurricular activities with a 10% discount. Children in Almost Home and Club J will be walked to extracurriculars by their counselors; full-day Early Childhood Center children will be walked to their extracurriculars by their teacher or assistant director. To register for Club J, click on the link for the day of your class after you enroll your child. Please note your child must be registered for an extracurricular class to participate in Club J and there are two separate registrations.

  • Early Childhood classes start the week of 9/16.
  • There will NOT be programs on the following dates: 10/2-10/4, 10/11, 10/14, 11/5, 11/11, 11/27-11/29.

Monday Classes

 

Tennis with Evolution Tennis Academy
Evolution Tennis Academy’s tennis program caters to kids of all levels and focuses on creating a positive, supportive, and fun environment which fosters a lifelong love for tennis. Instructors are not only skilled in the game of tennis but also great at engaging with young children and inspiring their best performance. This program will focus on creating a balance between skill development, physical fitness, and enjoyment.

Tiny Tigers with American Goju Karate (Ages 3-5)
Led by American GoJu Karate’s Director and Chief Instructor Sensei Bob Chillemi, this goal-oriented skills program helps children improve focus, control, balance, coordination, fitness, teamwork, discipline, and memory in a fun environment. Preschoolers develop confidence and self-discipline through the principles of the Tiny Tigers. Additional fees for uniforms are payable directly to the instructor.

Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Karate with American Goju Karate
Students progress through the belt system, improving fitness, focus, control, balance, coordination, teamwork, discipline, and memory in a fun environment that celebrates short-term and long-term goal achievement.

Challenge Island: Believe it or Not Island (Grades K-3)
Dive into the most mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, eye-popping island ever! Children will take on unbelievable engineering challenges inspired by wacky and wild 100% TRUE facts. From amazing animals to extreme sports, from epic earthquakes to outer space, from breathtaking rescues to crazy competitions, Believe It Or Not Island is sure to be a record breaker.

Paint, Print, Sculpt (Grades K-2)
In this mixed media art class, your child will explore their creativity through a variety of mediums and methods to make unique creations. Whether drawing or painting, creating prints, or building sculptures, your child will strengthen fine motor and problem-solving skills. Imaginative play will be incorporated throughout the lessons as children engage in expressive storytelling and games. The class will make messes and mistakes but reinforce the idea that everyone’s got what it takes to be an artist!

Multi-Sport with Train Like a Pro
Aspiring athletes will explore the fundamentals of various sports,  enhancing motor skills and enjoying the thrill of the game! They’ll experience a dynamic rotation including lacrosse, baseball, football, hockey, soccer, kickball, and basketball, fostering a well-rounded sports experience.

Cooking with Children’s Food Lab (Grades 2-5)
Jill Santopietro, founder of the Children’s Food Lab, brings multi-sensory food and cooking to students, where they’ll explore the stories or ingredients behind a dish, experiment with ingredients and cooking techniques, and learn to become comfortable in the kitchen. Students will make smoothies, salad, dumplings, chocolate Valentine’s, and more.This helps students to create a deeper connection to food and the environment.

JCC On Stage: Finding Nemo Kids, The Musical (Grades 1-4)
Dive into the magic of theater with our full-scale musical production of Disney’s “Finding Nemo Kids” on stage at The Ark! This class welcomes students of all experience levels, from the seasoned performer to those stepping into the spotlight for the first time. Led by led by actor and teaching artist Allie Scherich, who has worked with kids on numerous Broadway productions, and Chris Williams, who will lead set and costume design, children will not only showcase their talents on stage but also boost confidence, forge connections with new friends, and unleash their creativity.

Get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey under the sea!

Wednesday Classes

 

Gymnastics: Preschool and Level 1 (Ages 3-6)
This co-ed class for younger gymnasts is designed to develop your child’s physical and social abilities through body movement and group participation. Your child will learn basic gymnastics skills using the balance beam, bars, floor, trampoline, and basic tumbling skills.

Gymnastics: Level 1 and 2 (Grades K+)
This co-ed class is designed for beginner gymnasts aged 5 and up, with little or no experience (Level 1) or some prior experience (Level 2). Groups will be formed based on level after the first class. Students will build gymnastics skills that promote flexibility, strength, coordination and body awareness, while also building positive self-esteem. This is a non-competitive program that builds progressive skills in a relaxed and fun yet challenging atmosphere. Activities include bars, tumbling, vault, balance beam, and trampoline.

Art for Everyone
This inclusive class is designed for elementary-aged students with varying abilities. It focuses on the process of art-making as a sensorial, creative, and productive experience. We will use a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional materials to complete projects that all children can feel proud of. This class is led by an art therapist who has experience working with children with a wide range of emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities.

Cool Crafting: Sewing, Weaving, Clay and More
This class will introduce kids to traditional craft materials, but with a modern twist! Projects will include sewing, weaving, fiber, clay, and printing, and will allow young artists to explore the process from different angles.

Hip Hop Tots with Rivertown Dance Academy

In this fun and energetic class, we will explore the basics of hip-hop dance through lively warm-ups, fundamental moves, creative movement exercises, and dance games. Join us for a joyful introduction to this unique and vibrant dance!

Thursday Classes

 

Soccer Clinic with Train Like a Pro

Children will gain confidence and creativity on the field and improve their technical skills such as first touch, passing, dribbling, and shooting. They will also work on speed, agility, strength, and endurance—all while being in a fun, engaging environment.

Storybook Music and Theatre (Grades K-2)
In this fun and educational class, children are introduced to Theatre Arts by using their favorite books to create their own storybook tales. We will explore characterization, rhythmic play, song-writing, poetry, acting out scenes, and play theater games. Children learn collaboration, develop confidence and bring their own unique creativity to class! This class is a perfect introduction to Theater on its own or in conjunction with our new musical theater production of Finding Nemo Kids.

Friday Classes

Basketball Clinic with 6th Boro Hoops (Grades K-2)
The coaches from 6th Boro Hoops will be teaching your children the basic fundamentals of movement, coordination, and specific basketball skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. At the end of our clinic, each child should have a higher baseline of athletic ability as well as basketball basics!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles with iCamp (Grades K-2)
In this innovative engineering class, learners will explore the principles behind airplanes, cars, and trains. Through hands-on construction and engineering challenges, students will gain understanding of how vehicles work, develop problem-solving skills, and ignite their curiosity for engineering. Get ready to rev up your imagination and dive into the exciting world of junior vehicle engineering!

Minecraft Club: Outer Space with iCAMP (Grades 2-5)
Blast off into a galactic adventure! Young explorers will use Minecraft EDU to discover outer space by building interstellar civilizations, space stations, and planetary colonies. From designing futuristic spacecraft to navigating asteroid fields and encountering alien life forms, this program offers a thrilling blend of creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Little Engineers with iCAMP (Ages 4-5)
Join us for an exciting expedition into the fascinating world of machines. Through exciting projects and creative problem-solving, learners will design and build contraptions, experiment with mechanics, and engineer miniature catapults, zip lines, and bridges.
