SUMMARY:Friendsgiving Concert: American Songbook from the 60s and 70s
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an uplifting concert before partaking in our annual Friendsgiving potluck lunch! Violinist and pianist Susan Gordon and accordion player Jordan Shapiro will play a grab bag of familiar tunes from the American Songbook\, and some Klezmer hits as well. Sponsored by Concerts in Motion. \nAbout the musicians: \nSusan Gordon is an active chamber music and orchestral freelance violist and violinist in the New York metropolitan area. She is a member of The Queens Symphony and has performed with the Bronx Arts Ensemble\, Long Island Philharmonic\, and Dance Theater of Harlem. Susan has performed regularly in New York City theater orchestras of numerous Broadway productions including Miss Saigon\, Les Misérables\, Grand Hotel\, Guys and Dolls\, A Secret Garden\, and My Fair Lady. She holds a B.S. in Music Education from New York University and a M.F.A. in Chamber Music from Sarah Lawrence College. \nJordan Shapiro is a Hudson Valley–based multi-instrumentalist and teacher. Piano was his first love—he pairs strong classical technique with an easy improvisational fluency across rock-pop\, jazz\, and folk traditions—but his work also spans bluegrass\, Balkan\, jazz\, rock\, zydeco\, and Celtic styles. He toured for years with Project/Object\, the well-known Frank Zappa tribute band; performed and recorded with guitarist Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart\, Jeff Buckley); and worked with Nona Hendryx\, among many others.

SUMMARY:France\, Cradle of Modern Art: Fauvism and Cubism with Dr. Morgan Ridler
DESCRIPTION:FREE for members | $10 for non-members\nPart of the Renard Lecture Series \nIn the first decade of the twentieth century artists in France\, Germany and Italy shattered the rules of traditional art. Picasso\, Matisse\, Kandinsky\, Boccioni and others expanded on the innovations of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism and moved painting farther away from the idea that painting is a window to the world and more towards abstraction. In this series of three lectures Dr. Morgan Ridler will explore the political and social context as well as the formal innovations of Fauvism\, Cubism\, Expressionism and Futurism. These movements developed at the end of the “long” nineteenth century in a period of tremendous technological and scientific innovation and political upheaval in the run up to World War I. How did these external factors reveal themselves in paintings of nudes\, still-lives\, landscapes and the modern city? \nAbout the presenter: Morgan Ridler is an art historian based in Sleepy Hollow\, New York. Her book project Collaborative Surfaces: Bauhaus Wall Painting\, Wallpaper\, and Colored Architecture is being prepared for publication. Dr. Ridler completed her PhD in Art History at The Graduate Center\, CUNY in 2016 and has taught extensively including at The Cooper Union\, Westchester Community College\, Montclair State University and Hunter College. Recently she has taught courses at Kendal-on-Hudson and is a tour guide and trustee for The Historical Society\, serving Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.
