MLK Day of Service 2022

MLK Day of Service: Build a Better World this January

Project begins January 3 and runs through a virtual event on January 17, 2022

As we confront the next stage of the pandemic, you can help people rebuild their lives and help rebuild our community.

This January, the UJA and nonprofit partners will bring together thousands of New Yorkers in a region-wide effort in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Join the Shames JCC on the Hudson and other organizations around Westchester and make a difference in our community—and the greater community to which we all belong. You can pack Blizzard Boxes or food items, nourishing people’s bodies; or pack Play Packs of games and toys, nourishing the spirits of refugee children currently residing on U.S. military bases.

On MLK Day, January 17, we will come together virtually, to pack boxes in the community, and learn about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Tikkun Olam, and contemporary concerns around food insecurity and immigration.

The Shames JCC will also host a limited in-person event for teens. There will be outside and indoor shifts. Details here.

If you cannot make boxes but would like to participate, please purchase items from this Amazon Wishlist, and items donated will be packed and delivered by teen volunteers.

What’s a Blizzard Box?

A Blizzard Box includes the non-perishable makings for an emergency meal. When inclement weather postpones a trip to the food pantry, or unforeseen expenses create shortfalls in the groceries brought home from the store, a hand-decorated, packed-with-compassion, Blizzard Box provides its recipient with both physical and spiritual nourishment.

What’s a Play Pack?

Play Packs are boxes filled with small toys, games, and other fun-filled activities that will be delivered to Afghan refugee children at Joint Base Mcguire–Dix–Lakehurst. Each Play Pack should be fun for a school-aged child. In addition to the play packs, families are encouraged to write a note of support including a welcome to the US.

How to participate
  1. Select your project (you are invited and encouraged to make Blizzard Boxes and Play Packs). Participants will be provided boxes, tissue, DIY card printouts and coloring sheets to create boxes (directions will be included in the kits). Participants will purchase the food and items to fill the boxes.
  2. Blizzard Boxes: Items for purchase (per box): canned vegetable soup (no meat or poultry; low sodium preferred), canned fruit (in juice or water) or dried fruit (such as a box of raisins), canned vegetable soup (no meat or poultry; low sodium preferred), canned fruit (in juice or water) or dried fruit (such as a box of raisins), canned vegetable (low sodium preferred), canned tuna or salmon, box of milk (single serving, shelf-stable)
  3. Play Packs: Items should be gender-neutral. Each should include any 5 of the following 6 NEW items: coloring book or activity book, crayons, fidget spinner or pop-it type of toy, small play-doh or slime, bouncy ball, deck of cards or card game (Go-Fish, Uno, etc.)
  4. Register for Blizzard Box and/or Play Pack kits at a location convenient for you (there are several locations to choose from around Westchester). There will be materials to make 2 boxes in each kit. Please keep this in mind when signing up. You will need to purchase the items from the lists above for each BOX you create.
  5. Pick-up your kits Follow the directions carefully of when and how to pick up your materials.
  6. Prior to MLK Day, a Zoom/FB link will be distributed for the virtual event.
  7. Drop off your boxes at the same location you picked up your boxes, following the instructions from the organization.
