MLK Day of Service
Monday, January 17, 2022
Families and individuals of all ages are welcome to join the Shames JCC’s MLK Day of Service event! The Shames JCC, in collaboration with the JCC of Mid-Westchester, synagogues and other Jewish agencies across Westchester, invites participants to pack Blizzard Boxes and Personal Care Packages for people in need.
- What’s a Blizzard Box? With your help, we can address local food insecurity by packing Blizzard Boxes, which are boxes filled with nonperishable food items that feed individuals that are homebound by weather or other events. Boxes will be distributed to food pantries, senior centers, and other locations where there is need.
- What’s a Personal Care Package? We are also working with local and national NGOs to help the thousands of Afghan refugees in the process of being resettled in the US. One area of great need is personal care items. Personal Care Packages are boxes that will be filled with items like shampoo, moisturizers, hair products, and other needed supplies and sent to communities currently housed on US military bases.
On MLK Day, we will come together virtually or in person, to pack boxes in the community, and learn about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Tikkun Olam, and contemporary concerns around food insecurity and immigration.
Some locations will be offering in-person opportunities to participate and some are drop-off/pick-up locations only. Read below, select a location, and see how you can help!
