SUMMARY:Local Justice and Injustice with Judge Walter Schwartz
DESCRIPTION:Walter Schwartz\, a longtime Village Justice in Westchester\, will speak and answer questions candidly about his own experiences and observations inside the local judicial system. If you’ve ever\, or even if you’ve never\, gotten a parking ticket or served as a juror\, you’ll want to tell it to this retired judge and hear what he has to say about how “justice” is dispensed and judges are chosen.

SUMMARY:Pop-up Shop: Sleepy Hollow Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us to purchase a great selection of children’s books curated from the local bookshop Sleepy Hollow Bookshop. \nAbout the Founder \nAfter 15 years of living in Sleepy Hollow and listening to residents’ desire for a local place to buy children’s books and a place to gather\, Leah Bloom decided to combine both ideas in the Sleepy Hollow Bookshop. It has been a longtime dream of hers to run a shop that centers on community and connects children and teens with reading. Previously\, Leah worked for 10 years as a librarian at SUNY Purchase. Before attending graduate school to become a librarian\, Leah worked in the business world as an environmental consultant. Leah and her husband Doug moved to Sleepy Hollow in 2006 after attending a wedding locally and deciding this was the place to be. They still live in Sleepy Hollow\, now with their two boys and one somewhat sneaky dog\, Kona. You can find the boys’ (and their friends’) favorite books highlighted in the store. Leah and Doug now believe even more that Sleepy Hollow is the place to be\, especially the awesome Bookshop at 95 Beekman Ave.

SUMMARY:Pop-up Shop: Sasha's Seafood
DESCRIPTION:Join us with Sasha’s Seafood in the lobby for chowder\, smoked salmon\, fresh salmon\, marinades\, and more! \nSasha grew up in a third-generation fishmonger’s home in NYC. Her stepdad\, David Samuels\, brought—and still brings—home the day’s best from the market to cook and eat as a family before returning to Fulton Fish Market at midnight to work. Her grandmothers on both sides (Israeli\, French) were gifted at feeding their families and gave her a love of home-cooking and a passion for the only freshest seafood. With sustainability as a longtime driving force in work and life\, she wanted to help bring responsible seafood to the area.

SUMMARY:Global Leadership: Who's Next? A JCC Roundtable Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Global Leadership: Who’s Next? A JCC Roundtable Discussion\nInterested in taking a deeper dive into foreign affairs? Join us for an engaging discussion with renowned international economist David Cheney. David will circulate readings in advance and lead an interactive conversation on the changes to the US-led “liberal democratic order” that prevailed after WWII until the early 2000s. \nThis US-led world order upheld democracy and brought rapid economic globalization\, helping billions of people around the world become wealthier\, healthier\, and better educated–but it also left many working-class people behind. A series of crises have also eroded US credibility and clout in the world over the last 15 years. Can the US lead the world order again and if not– who will? \nAbout the facilitator: David Cheney is an international economics writer\, instructor\, and trainer for international and educational institutions. He has held a variety of positions at the International Monetary Fund. He has provided communications and writing support for a number of multilateral institutions including the World Bank\, Inter-American Development Bank\, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. David has served as an adjunct professor of Global Economics and Writing at NYU and currently runs two foreign affairs discussion groups at the Manhattan JCC and Scarsdale Adult School.

SUMMARY:Women's History Month with Dana Rubin
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Women’s History Month\, Dana will be telling us about what inspired her to rescue women’s speeches from obscurity. She’ll share a few stories about historic women speakers you may not have heard of — from right in our backyard. And she’ll explain why it’s so important that we shift our understanding of who spoke out in history to include women. She makes a powerful case that unless you know the history of women’s speech\, you don’t really know American history — and that all our public voices are needed to create the world we want to live in. \nDana Rubin is a consultant\, speechwriter\, and speaker who’s on a mission to encourage more women to put their views into the public square. She created the Speaking While Female Speech Bank to broaden our understanding of the role of women orators in history. It’s the world’s largest online archive of women’s speeches from around the world and across time\, free for anyone to use. She’s also about to publish a women’s speech anthology\, “Speaking While Female: 75 Extraordinary Speeches by American Women\,” which tells the story of America through the voices of women\, from 1637-2021. Dana is a speaker and a public speaking coach\, and she leads workshops that support women to be thought leaders\, subject matter experts\, brand ambassadors\, and role models for future generations of women and girls.

SUMMARY:Project Genesis: An Interfaith Conversation Between Two Clergy
DESCRIPTION:Project Genesis: An Interfaith Conversation Between Two Clergy\nTwo clergies from different faiths will analyze and discuss different interpretations of the books of Genesis. \nRabbi Jay Stein and Reverend Gareth Evans will discuss the story of Jacob and the birthright. When parents pick a favorite child\, the impact is felt for many generations. In this session\, we will unpack the biblical dysfunctional family of Isaac\, Esau\, Rebecca\, and Jacob. Together we will explore what our two faiths have to say about complicated family dynamics. \nAbout Project Genesis: The same story can have multiple meanings. The books of the Old Testament in particular are ripe with symbol\, metaphor\, and character\, providing the reader with the opportunity to unpack and analyze the meanings. In Project Genesis\, we will discuss different interpretations of some of the beloved stories we learned as children and now revisit as adults.

SUMMARY:How to Start a Business: A Broad River Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Thinking about starting or expanding a small business or project? We know many women have ideas for starting small businesses but do not feel like they have the knowledge\, confidence\, or financial backing to make it happen. \nOur next Broad River program aims to address some of these questions through a panel discussion featuring three women who founded their own businesses in different ways. We will talk about the small business owner journey from idea to implementation to sustainability and everything in between. We will also provide concrete resources to help you learn more and maybe even launch your next project! \nThis event\, facilitated by Laurie Hirsch Schulz\, includes time for break out groups and prompted discussions as well as an opportunity to network with other women. Bring your business cards\, flyers\, and anything else! Light snacks included. \nAbout some of our panelists: \nAmy Hall is the founder and proprietor of Hudson Valley Books for Humanity and was inspired to start the store when she needed to find a new home for her own books. Her vision of saving books from landfills grew to include the idea of a bookstore that would promote diverse authors\, social justice issues and planet-friendly living\, as well as featuring local artisans and events for the community. Her vision became a reality in November 2021\, and Amy now oversees everything from event planning to artisan curation to all-around supervision of the store\, as well as continuing her decades-long work in sustainability at Eileen Fisher. \nMonica Shulman is a New York-based artist whose brand of gestural abstraction is a form of story-telling. A first generation American of Cuban and Argentinian descent\, who left her career as an attorney to focus on her art practice full-time\, Monica lives and works in the lower Hudson Valley with her husband and their children. Monica has been featured in various publications including The Washington Post\, Popular Photography\, Westchester Magazine\, and Create Magazine. Her work has been shown at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City\, the National Association of Women Artists\, the National Arts Club in New York City\, Photo LA\, Art Market Hamptons\, PULSE Art Fair\, and the New York Mercantile Exchange\, among others. \nLaurie Hirsch Schulz is the founder of Broad River and the president of the board of the Westchester Youth Alliance. Through her business LHS Coaching\, Laurie partners with career explorers\, solopreneurs and non-profit founders to navigate through change to clarify\, embrace and activate new opportunities. Services include 1:1 coaching\, masterminds and interactive workshops. LinkedIn: lauriehirschschulz

SUMMARY:The Torah in the Tarot
DESCRIPTION:Would you believe that there is a connection between Tarot cards and Judaism? Join us to hear Tarot researcher Stav Appel discuss his provocative thesis that the Tarot de Marseille–the artistic ancestor of contemporary Tarot cards– originally served as a tool for secret Jewish education during the exile of Jews from France. \nTogether we will explore the ways in which the original Tarot may have been a secret Torah\, designed to avoid detection by unwanted eyes during one of the darkest moments of Jewish history. \n*Please note that this class is not a Tarot reading class*

SUMMARY:PARADE on Broadway
DESCRIPTION:Broadway Trip to “Parade”\nJoin your JCC friends for a matinee showing of PARADE on Broadway starring Tony\, Grammy\, and Emmy Award® winner\, Ben Platt\, and rising star\, Micaela Diamond. \nThe New York Times hails PARADE as a Critic’s Pick and “the best-sung musical in many a New York season. It recalls an era of big casts\, big stories\, and big talent in a time when musicals actually felt like events.” \nPARADE is based on the real-life story of Leo and Lucille Frank\, a newlywed Jewish couple living in Georgia in 1913. When Leo is accused of an unspeakable crime\, it propels them into an unimaginable test of faith\, humanity\, justice\, and devotion. Riveting and gloriously hopeful\, PARADE reminds us that to love\, we must truly see one another. \nThe show begins at 2 PM and runs for 2.5 hours including intermission. Comfortable transportation to and from the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre will be provided; the bus will leave the Shames JCC at 12:15 PM and return after the event at approximately 6:00 PM. \nSpace is limited to 14\, nonmembers are welcome! \nThis event is generously subsidized by UJA/Verve 55+ Living and is non-refundable after March 1.
