SUMMARY:Dissonance & Resolution in Jazz and Life
DESCRIPTION:In this hybrid lecture/performance\, accomplished pianist Rocco Dapice will describe and demonstrate different ways that dissonance and resolution are created by composers and musicians and how they mirror our life experience. In official music terms\, this involves cadences\, consonant vs. dissonant intervals\, and chord qualities. Using samples mostly from the jazz genre\, he’ll show how musical dissonance parallels the cadences\, tensions\, and resolutions in life — which we can all relate to. \nAbout the performer: Rocco Dapice is a pianist\, teacher\, writer\, YAMAHA Performing Artist\, and graduate of the Manhattan School of Music. He is on the faculty of the Manhattan School’s summer program and New Visions School for Advanced Math & Science; is a teaching artist for MSM’s Distance Learning center; and teaches privately. Rocco has performed widely in over 390 cities\, communicating in word and song in 45 of the 50 states\, Canada\, Mexico\, and the Caribbean. Rocco is a member of ASCAP\, the Jazz Education Network (JEN)\, and the National Assn. of Record Industry Professionals.

We begin our time together by lighting candles and end with a little grape juice and challah… all in a very inclusive way. Neighbors of all backgrounds are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Recently\, the Rabbinical Assembly and United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and The Episcopal Church joined 25 other regional and national Jewish and Christian organizations in filing a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security over new rules allowing immigration raids and arrests at houses of worship. These rules rescind a 30-year-old policy that protected houses of worship and other sensitive locations. Many of our congregations have reached out in distress about this change. What can clergy do now to ensure we protect our community? \nThis is part of the Common Ground: Interfaith Dialogue series. Rabbi Jay Stein\, Greenburgh Hebrew Center\, and Rev. Gareth Evans\, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church of Irvington\, come together for an enlightening conversation to build bridges across real and perceived differences. Come hear international economist David Cheney explain why countries need aid\, and provide the pros and cons of our existing foreign aid system. We’ll discuss what kind of aid has been the most effective and why\, and how to make aid more effective in the future. \nAbout the facilitator: David Cheney is an international economics writer\, instructor\, and trainer for international and educational institutions. He has held a variety of positions at the International Monetary Fund and has provided communications and writing support for a number of multilateral institutions including the World Bank\, Inter-American Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. David has served as an adjunct professor of Global Economics and Writing at NYU and currently runs two foreign affairs discussion groups at the Manhattan JCC and Scarsdale Adult School.

DESCRIPTION:Members: $200; non-members: $240\nLunch provided \nThe JCC’s Babysitting Certification & Internship Program is for young people ages 11 – 16 years old\, offering training and mentorship for all levels of babysitting experience. The program begins with a 7 hour American Red Cross training that provides youth planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nLeadership skills; how to develop a babysitting business; how to keep themselves and others safe (including basic child care and basic first aid skills); and strategies for encouraging and maintaining calm and appropriate behaviors when on the job.\nParticipants who successfully complete this training will earn their American Red Cross Babysitting Certification and will be eligible for serving up to 10 internship hours in the JCC’s Kidspace drop-in childcare center.\nThere they will engage with children ages 6 months to 8\, developing their skills and receiving mentorship and feedback from the Kidspace director and staff. Successful interns will receive a letter of reference and may be referred to JCC families looking for trained and certified babysitters.\n\nRed Cross Babysitting Course Instruction and Certification – 7 hours\nFirst Aid kit provided by the Red Cross\n10 internship hours at Kidspace with mentorship\nCertificate of Completion and possible references and referrals
