SUMMARY:Music of the 50s Part I with David Cheney
DESCRIPTION:Music of the 50s was in some ways more revolutionary than 60s music in that it blew away centuries of accumulated racial and social proprieties in America and around the world. US pop charts in the early 50s were dominated by remnants of 40s big band era\, with simple and melodic ballads by such vocalists as Patti Page and Frank Sinatra. But everything changed in 1955 with the release of Rock Around the Clock. The new R&R\, the birthright of the baby boomers\, united black and white teens in a common culture and softened their prejudices–while dividing teens from their parents\, the mass media\, and even the govt. Join us as trace the evolution of 50s music in three sessions (early\, mid\, and late 50s) and share memories of a seemingly simpler and happier time.

SUMMARY:Nature As a Sanctuary: Seeking Refuge in the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Pamela-Kolber Zicca will share the pathway of healing through her stories and photography displayed in her book\, Nature As a Sanctuary: Seeking Refuge in the Pandemic. Her little gem of a book is a reminder that life is all around us if we only know how to look. Pam is a passionate lover of nature\, a photographer\, and a swim and aqua aerobics instructor. In addition to her job as a swim instructor\, the pandemic allowed Pam to explore her love of both nature and photography. For her\, nature was a true sanctuary during the pandemic giving her peace\, inspiration and hope when she was furloughed from work in March of 2020. Her experience of nature as a sanctuary further inspired her to create a facebook group Nature Through the Senses on April 23\, 2020. \nPeople from all over the area post their beautiful nature images and have become part of a community that stays connected through love of nature and photography. Pamela Kolber-Zicca is a proud sister\, aunt\, wife and mother living minutes away from the Hudson River where she can be found very early in the morning \, camera in hand\, photographing nature.

SUMMARY:Millionaire’s Row on the Palisades: A Glimpse of the Gilded Edge
DESCRIPTION:Artists\, captains of industry\, showmen — all were among the men and women who\, from the time of the Civil War through the Great Depression\, had unique and often lavish homes built upon the precipices of the New Jersey Palisades. Using newly discovered letters and diaries they have transcribed from the Miles family\, historical interpreter Eric Nelsen will bring the story of the grand estates — and the families and servants who lived at them — into vibrant focus. Eric Nelsen was hired as a seasonal employee at the Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey in 1992. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Montclair State University in 1997\, and the next year became a full-time historical interpreter at the park. He oversees the park’s historic Kearney House\, where he’s helped to develop a unique “living history” program based on the house’s role as a nineteenth-century Hudson River tavern and homestead. In the office\, he supervises park publications\, including the njpalisades.org website\, brochures\, and interpretive signs. On days off\, Eric enjoys being outdoors\, getting into or onto the water\, cycling\, and time travel.

SUMMARY:Gross National Happiness: A New Measure for Countries with David Cheney
DESCRIPTION:Bhutan is known for using an unconventional measure of development since 1972: Gross National Happiness (GNH). Rather than using traditionally narrow economic criteria\, Bhutan assesses its well-being on the basis of sustainable and equitable socio-economic development\, environmental protection\, promotion of culture\, and good governance. Bhutan’s use of the GNH principles helped mobilize its whole population to avoid even a single COVID-19 death in 2020. Its positive experience offers lessons for other countries and spawned the World Population Review’s Happiness Report in 2002\, which assesses the level of happiness in 149 countries. \n

SUMMARY:The Disappeared of Guatemala
DESCRIPTION:“Guatemala has the dubious distinction of inventing the political condition of “disappearance” in late 20th century Latin America. In Guatemala’s long history of repressing its own citizenry\, forced disappearance is rooted in the 1954 US-backed overthrow of democratically elected President Jacobo Arbenz and was used throughout the military dictatorships that followed. Driven by a Cold War ideology that conflated group identity with real or imagined political beliefs\, three decades of successive military regimes expanded their repressive practices to include massive forced disappearances leading to a deliberate campaign of extermination of ladino (non-Maya) political activists and ultimately genocide of the Maya. This lecture traces state deployment of forced disappearance of opposition leaders in Guatemala from the 1966 mass disappearance of members of the Guatemalan Workers Party to the 1980 mass disappearance of union leaders in order to understand the systematic use of forced disappearance by a state so fragile that it disappeared children in the 1980s. Specifically\, I consider the case of Dr. Marvyn Perez who was forcibly disappeared and tortured by Guatemalan security forces when he was 14. More than 30 years later\, he continues to seek justice for himself and others who did not survive. \nVictoria Sanford is Professor of Anthropology and Founding Director of the Center for Human Rights and Peace Studies at Lehman College. She is a member of the Anthropology Doctoral Faculty at the Graduate Center and an Affiliated Scholar at the Center for the Study of the Holocaust\, Genocide\, and Crimes Against Humanity\, City University of New York. She holds a doctorate in Anthropology from Stanford University where she studied International Human Rights Law and Immigration Law at Stanford Law School. She was a Bunting Peace Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies\, Harvard University.\n“

SUMMARY:Baseball in the American Culture with Evan Weiner
DESCRIPTION:Baseball has been embedded in the American culture since the end of the Civil War. There have been poems\, songs\, comedy routines\, movies\, TV shows\, books with baseball themes. Baseball cards also were a big part of the culture. Casey At the Bat was required reading for elementary school students at one point. Abbott and Costello’s Who’s On First routine debuted on radio and led them to the Hall of Fame. The name Cooperstown means something special. And even Broadway got into the act with a play. Nobody ever wanted to be “Wally Pipped”. Even today business analytics may have evolved from Money Ball. Baseball was once the king of American sports\, that may have ended but baseball in the culture has never gone away. \n  \nRegistration to come later

SUMMARY:Triangle Shirt Waist Factory Fire with Eugene Boesch
DESCRIPTION:On March 25\, 1911\, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory at Washington Square in New York City burned\, killing 145 workers. It is remembered as one of the most infamous incidents in American industrial history as the deaths were largely preventable – most of the victims\, young immigrant women\, died as a result of neglected safety features and locked doors within the factory building. The tragedy brought widespread attention to the dangerous workshop conditions of factories of the day and lead to the development of laws and regulations that better protected the safety of workers.
