He’ll discuss how different styles of jazz were created in response to the socio-economic and political themes of certain decades and how jazz music shaped the sounds of music we hear today. \nAbout the instructor: Described by WNPR’s Owen McNally as “A modern Jazz messenger\,” saxophonist Albert Rivera has been a consistent force on a national and international level since finalizing his studies at The New School University Jazz and Contemporary Music Program. Born and raised in the Bronx\, Albert is a recipient of a Chamber Music America Residency award\, an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award\, and most recently a City Arts Corp Grant. He is the current Director of Operations at the Litchfield Jazz Camp and serves on the Jazz Faculty at SUNY Purchase.

In 2023\, Minna Dubin published the internationally acclaimed book Mom Rage: The Everyday Crisis of Modern Motherhood\, inspired by a list about her rage she wrote six years earlier. In this special interactive discussion\, Minna will share her original list that marked the beginning of her own transformation with mom rage and help you uncover your own big feelings about parenthood–and what to do about it. Books will be available for purchase on-site from Transom! Wine and cheese will be served\, and childcare through Kidspace is available. \nMinna Dubin is the author of MOM RAGE: The Everyday Crisis of Modern Motherhood. Her writing has been featured in the New York Times\, Oprah Daily\, Salon\, Parents\, Romper\, The Forward\, and elsewhere. Minna has become a leading feminist voice on the topic of mom rage\, appearing on MSNBC\, Good Morning America\, The Tamron Hall Show\, NPR\, and the BBC Woman’s Hour. The first selection is Misery\, directed by Rob Reiner and based on the book by Stephen King. \nOne of the more curious phenomena of our time and culture is fandom and the rise of we-ness–the fanatical affinity that people have for sports teams\, rock stars\, and celebrities. In Misery\, danger awaits when psychic boundaries become so blurred that a person doesn’t know where fantasy begins and ends.  Misery sets the stage for us to discuss the role of we-ness in our culture and how symbiotic relationships– with each other and within ourselves– are more pervasive than we care to acknowledge. \nProgram schedule:\n6:30: Dinner available \n7:00: Welcome & Introduction to the film \n7:15: Film begins \n9:00-10:00: Discussion (stay as long as you like!) \nAbout the presenter: Scott Bloom has spent his 33-year career at the intersection of mental health\, schools\, and communities. He was the founding director of School Mental Health Services for the New York City Department of Education\, where he built a city-wide system of mental health services and resources in over 1800 city schools to better serve the needs of 1.2 million students and families. Mr. Bloom has certification as a psychotherapist and a private practice and supervision in New York City. He is currently the director of special projects at New York Psychotherapy and Counseling Center.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of music and connection in honor of Leonard Cohen’s 7th yahrzeit. \nNobel laureate and modern-day prophet Leonard Cohen’s timeless body of work as a songwriter\, performer\, and poet spans more than 50 years and explores religion\, politics\, isolation\, love\, and mortality. His creations delved fearlessly into the essence of human existence\, often doing so through the lens of Jewish history\, texts\, and tradition. \nAs we commemorate his 7th yahrzeit\, join guitarist Dan Nadel\, vocalist Shira Averbuch\, and drummer Satoshi Takeishi for a tribute celebrating Cohen’s life and music. After the concert\, we’ll gather for wine and light snacks. \nWhere: The concert will take place in the Experiential Theater at The Masters School 49 Clinton Ave. Dobbs Ferry NY. The theater is inside the Fonseca Center and is handicap accessible. Plenty of parking is on site. \nWhen: The show runs from 3-4:15 and will be immediately followed by a casual reception in the Sharon Room. \nWho: This event is organized by a consortium of Rivertowns synagogues including Temple Beth Abraham\, Temple Beth Shalom\, Pleasantville Community Synagogue\, Woodlands Community Temple\, and Greenburgh Hebrew Center\, and generously sponsored by UJA-Federation of NY. It is geared towards adults 55+ but all are welcome! \nAbout the Performers: \nShira Averbuch \nNamed “the golden-voiced singer” by The New York Times\, Shira Averbuch\, is a NYC based Israeli-American singer-songwriter and actor. She serves as the Artist in Residence at B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue in NYC. \nBorn in upstate NY to Israeli parents\, Shira split her time growing up between Israel and the States. After finishing her service in the Israeli Army Band\, Shira moved to NYC and graduated from The New School with a BFA in Musical Theater with a minor in Music Therapy. Shira has recorded two albums and found her place sharing her healing song in both the Jewish world and the world at large. She is set to release new music in 2024. \nDan Nadel \nDan Nadel is an Israeli-born guitarist and composer\, whose personal style combines flamenco\, jazz\, and Middle Eastern influences. His debut album\, Brooklyn Prayer\, was released in 2005 to critical acclaim\, and was followed by recordings and performances as a bandleader\, a solo performing artist\, and an in-demand collaborator. \nNadel is the music director for Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Manhattan and director of the 92NY’s new program Bridges in Sound. He attended the jazz program at the prestigious “Thelma Yellin” High School of the Arts in Tel Aviv\, before completing his three-year army duty as the guitarist for the IDF’s Air Force Band. He is a graduate of the BFA jazz program at The New School in NYC and has studied with jazz masters Billy Harper\, Hal Galper\, Cecil McBee in NY\, and flamenco guitarist Antonio Moya in Seville\, Spain.
