SUMMARY:Separate but Equal: How Two Traditions Built America’s Sound with Michael Shamosh
DESCRIPTION:FREE for members | $10 for non-members\nPart of the Renard Lecture Series \nAmerican music stands beside the European tradition as its equal\, but it comes from a completely different source–sound\, memory\, and lived experience. It grew along the corridor from Memphis to New Orleans\, carried by musicians like Mamie Smith\, Louis Armstrong\, and Bessie Smith\, who shaped a tradition we feel before we analyze. Join us as we follow that tradition from spirituals to blues to jazz. \nAbout the presenter: Michael Shamosh is a musician and historian of American music. He was known as “Sunnyside Slim\,” the harmonica player for the local band Sunnyside Slim and The Hudsons. Michael has been a chief investment strategist for brokerage firms\, and a manager of mutual funds and a hedge fund. He is a JCC member and lives in Irvington\, New York where he raised two sons with his wife Renee.

SUMMARY:Group Broadway Outing: Here There Are Blueberries
DESCRIPTION:$85 for members | $100 for non-members\nRegistration includes orchestra seats and round trip transportation from the JCC\nPre-show dinner available to add-on \nIn 2007\, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum archivist Rebecca Erbelding discovers a never-before-seen photo album depicting Nazi officers at Auschwitz in moments of leisure and celebration—images that stand in chilling contrast to the horrors we associate with the Holocaust. As she tracks down the origins of the photos\, she uncovers essential questions about how and why we record things\, who they’re meant for\, and how close to the edge of evil everyone stands. Based on true events\, Here There Are Blueberries tells the story of these historical photographs—what they reveal about the perpetrators of the Holocaust\, and our own humanity. \nA Pulitzer Prize finalist from Tectonic Theater Project (The Laramie Project)\, Here There Are Blueberries has been hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “the greatest detective story ever told.” The Washington Post calls it “riveting\,” The Guardian describes it as “unforgettable\,” and The Wall Street Journal names it “one of the finest new plays of the year.” \nSchedule:\n4:15 pm: Optional family style dinner at the J catered by Chef Noam ($25 per person)\n5:00 pm: Bus leaves JCC\n7:00-8:30 pm: Performance (no intermission)\n9:45 pm (approx): Return back to JCC \nNOTE:\nNo refunds after 11/13/26 unless someone takes your spot
