Renard Lecture: From One, Two – Three Centuries of Duo Violin Music

In this Performance-Lecture, Violinists Shem Guibbory and Sergey Nazarov will present the inside view of a Violinist’s world of sound. They will highlight for you differences and blends in iconic works by Telemann and Bach, sweet unknown works by Leclair and Pleyel, and heart-wrenching, foot-tapping folk music compiled and arranged by Bartok.

Violinist Shem Guibbory, of Westchester, is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning musician and creator of mixed-media performance art. Since 1992, Mr. Guibbory has been a member of the first violin section of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He has appeared as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Beethoven Halle Orchestra, the Kansas City Symphony and the Symphony of the New World. He was the original violinist in the Steve Reich Ensemble – his recording of Violin Phase on the ECM label has become an American classic of avant-garde music. He recorded five CDs with Anthony Davis, including Maps, a violin concerto commissioned by the Kansas City Symphony. His latest CD, Voice of the People (2010), received excellent reviews – it presents Gabriela Lena Frank’s Peruvian-influenced music with Dmitri Shostokovich’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op.137 (1968) along with short illustrated films.

Violinist Sergey Nazarov, of Westchester, has performed extensively in Europe, the Ukraine, the United States, Brazil and Canada. His active career includes performances at Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, solo and chamber music engagements with Brooklyn Neighborhood Orchestra, Albert Einstein College Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Mountain Festival, Connecticut Alliance for Music. He is a former member of the Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra and concertmaster of New York Stage Originals. He also played with the Greenwich Symphony, New American Chamber Orchestra, Festival de due Mondi, Italy, and Classical Winter in Jerusalem. Mr. Nazarov studied with Albert Markov, Ariana Bronne and members of The American String Quartet. In addition to his active performing schedule, Mr. Nazarov is on the faculty of several private music schools in the New York area.
